One summer I realized that Khan Academy had all the resources I needed. So, I used it to teach two algebra classes. In one class, I asked my students to watch the videos, do all the quizzes, homework, and tests. In the other class, I taught traditionally from the front. By Christmas, it was evident that the kids who were able to move around and not be taught from the front were advancing more. I saw a Socratic method of learning emerge, and it was amazing to watch. I get goosebumps every time I think about it. As a tiny school, and being the only math teacher, it gives me that flexibility. But I think, with a bit of creativity, bigger schools could do the same thing. It’s documented that they’ve learned it and mastered it. Kids who spent an average of 20 minutes a day achieved an 80% or above - it was unbelievable.
