Researchers revealed The Secret of the dexterity of goofy little springtails in November of 2022. These millimeter-long insect-like animals have an organ on their abdomen called a collaphor colophores which helps them stay grounded while preparing to jump, orient themselves mid-air, and stick the landing in less than 20 milliseconds. This is why it looks like they are springing uncontrollably, and why they land right side up 85 percent of the time.

Their jumping skills are now inspiring robot design; bouncy Bots could help Mars rovers overcome big obstacles and see way more terrain. With any luck, the robots will look just as hilarious as the springtails!
