In 1944, an amateur astronomer named Hisako Koyama pointed a telescope towards the sky and began to draw the sun’s shifting surface. Little did she know that these sketches would be the start of one of the most important records of solar activity in human history. Over four decades and 10,000 meticulous drawings, Hisako Koyama’s sunspot sketches helped scientists reconstruct 400 years of sunspot activity, dating all the way back to the days of Galileo.
