Thanks everyone for joining us for another Wisecrack Live! Michael will be here in a moment, and then we’ll hear from Josh Harris and Maddie. We missed everyone last week, so we’re glad to be back feeling better!

Someone suggested Wisecrack Work Gang coffee mugs, which is a great idea! We need more merch ideas, so please send them our way.

I asked Henry if he ever gets bad headaches, and he said from time to time he gets pretty extreme migraines.

Vox Podcast was here talking about an abstract they wrote for an academic conference about Superman. Julia ruined Henry’s theory that anyone who hadn’t gotten Covid-19 yet couldn’t get it.

I asked Henry if he had Covid-19 before, and he said he had it once last year. He said the first time he had it he was the sickest he’d ever been in his life, the second time felt like a bad cold, and the third time he just felt tired.

Someone asked what kind of Strat Henry plays, and it’s an American Professional Two.

Dirkster thanked us for the wish of happy times, and Martin said boofender yay Jackson! Someone likes to play metal with thin strings.

Natasha also had Covid-19 twice, and Son Harris was in Bali this month.

Vox caught Covid-19 at their last conference, and Henry mentioned that the academic community is more immuno-compromised because it’s mostly inside kids. He had a professor in grad school who got Covid-19 and was in the ICU for three weeks. Someone commented on a video about conspiracy theories:

“I never thought of it from the grief perspective - you’ve been lied to, you know something is wrong and you don’t have the language to explain your feelings. Which is why we should all be in therapy, as a culture we look at these people like they are dumb - a simple justification for the sometimes.”

This comment really resonated with me, because it’s true that sometimes we don’t have the language to express our feelings about the things that are wrong in the world. We need to be more understanding of people who feel this way and recognize that therapy can be a great way to help them articulate their feelings. but I think it’s important to contextualize the harms and to recognize that like a lot of the harms associated with religious fundamentalism are also associated with other forms of fundamentalism like nationalism and like economic fundamentalism and so on

In 2017, Jordan Peterson started to become more prominent due to his comments on Bill C-17. He tapped into the anger of young, mostly white men, who were anxious about feminism and multiculturalism. This anxiety was not new, but it was heightened in 2018 when James Lindsay exposed the “Grievance Studies Affair”. During this time, Sam Harris and other members of the “New Atheist” movement were promoting Islamophobia. They believed that by debunking religious belief through philosophical and critical thinking, they could reduce the harms of religious fundamentalism. It is important to note that similar harms are associated with other forms of fundamentalism, such as nationalism and economic fundamentalism.
