Craig Kaplan is an associate professor in the school of computer science at the University of Waterloo. He got into tiling theory as a graduate student when he did a program to let you draw escher-like tiles as a final project. His work was mostly about applying tiling theory and computer graphics in art and design. He was already familiar with the Penrose tiling which is the celebrity tiling in the field. His PhD thesis was about developing automated tools to modify the edges of Penrose tiles. He was interested in the intersection of mathematics and art. The big question was if the Penrose tiling could be done with one tile, and he was able to answer that question.
