Developing embryos have two specialized skin cells at the front of their chest which replicate and move down to the groin. This ‘milk line’ usually disappears, apart from the tissue which forms the breasts. However, in some cases, the tissue doesn’t completely go away, leading to the formation of ’ectopic’ or ‘accessory’ nipples. These can vary in size and development, and may even enlarge during lactation, just like regular breasts. Ultimately, it’s just tissue, and it’s nothing to worry about.
