“Come on!” Top Gun: Maverick won the Oscar for best Sound. I recently spoke to the supervising sound editor, who explained that capturing the power of the jets without distorting was a challenge. Embracing distortion was the solution, and it works in the movie; when Maverick is doing the canyon run and you hear that distorted rip, it’s intentional. For other scenes like the Mach 10 opener, the team had to create sounds from other raw materials. The Roebling Suspension Bridge provided the current crossing the wings. If you want to learn more about the Oscar-winning sound design behind the film, check out this YouTube video I made.
