Not only is the abortion pill safe, it is actually safer than staying pregnant, at least in the US. When the FDA approved Mifeprestone for abortion in 2000, one condition was that doctors would have to report any hospitalizations or deaths to the FDA. For every 1 million users of the abortion pill, the FDA found only 5 deaths attributable to the medication. This is in comparison to other drugs such as azithromycin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic (often called a Z-pak), which had 35 deaths for every 1 million people who take it, and phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors like Viagra, which had 40 deaths per million people who take it.

The abortion pill is also safer than carrying a pregnancy to term. In the United States in 2020, for every 1 million live births there were 230 women who died from maternal complications. Currently, there is a right wing group suing to ban mifepristone and their argument is that the FDA did not do enough to make sure the drug was safe before approving it 20 years ago. However, this is simply not true. We now have nearly a quarter century of data that shows the abortion pill is safe.
