**Glaciers are majestic, but some of them are inhabited by ice worms, cousins of the earthworm. These worms live their entire lives in glaciers, burrowing deep into the ice to eat bacteria, then coming back to the surface to eat snow algae. As glaciers are melting, the worms are not helping. They are playing climate roulette, as climate change could mean the destruction of their habitat and the extinction of their species; however, their role in this process is much smaller than humans. In addition, glaciers also contain fossil fuels. As the worms wiggle around in the ice, they create swirly paths that increase oxygen exposure to the fossil fuels, thus increasing their breakdown and release into the atmosphere. This breakdown of fossil fuels contributes to glaciers melting, so, at a very small scale, this worm’s existence contributes to its own demise.
