The US recently sent a shipment of cluster bombs to Ukraine to use in their war against Russia. Cluster bombs are controversial and banned in many countries due to their high failure rate and the fact that they often pose a risk to civilians. In past conflicts, 94% of documented cluster munition casualties have been civilians, not soldiers. Additionally, up to 30% of cluster bombs don’t explode on impact, leaving them on the ground and potentially posing a risk indefinitely. This is especially true for children, as 62.5% of casualties from cluster bombs in Kosovo were boys under the age of 18. The US has a long history with cluster bombs, having dropped millions of them in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, and they still kill and maim hundreds of people to this day.
