Florida’s new 6 week abortion ban is even more restrictive than it appears at first glance. Pregnancy is medically considered to begin on the first day of a pregnant person’s last period, but it actually begins shortly after ovulation. This means that someone who is 6 weeks pregnant is only 4 weeks along. At this stage, at home tests cannot detect pregnancy, and reliable results only start showing up two weeks later. Studies show that on average, people find out they are pregnant at around 5 and a half weeks, and the younger they are, the later they are likely to discover it. In addition, Florida requires two in-person doctor visits with a 24 hour waiting period between them. This effectively closes the window for obtaining an abortion. The law will not go into effect immediately, but when it does, it will be a major change, as Florida has been less restrictive than its neighboring states.
