If you’re familiar with our YouTube channel, you probably recognize a few voices like Sam, who always uses a map in their videos, Coleman who usually shows a photo, and Joss who drops a bunch of data. Our lives are just like line charts, and behind the scenes, there are people you don’t always see on camera, but you might recognize them just by their voices.

Sandra Stennett is a laryngologist, which means she treats people who have trouble with any of the three main functions of the larynx: speaking, breathing, and swallowing. The larynx is hollow, and when air pushes through it, it forces the vocal folds open and then they snap closed, creating a sound wave. This sound wave travels through the larynx and up into the oral and nasal cavities, where it bounces around and produces the sound of your voice.

The size and shape of these features, as well as the brain’s manipulation of pitch, emotion, and inflection, make our voices sound unique. Even major changes like puberty can affect how we communicate, since testosterone can have an impact on our voices. Respect our journeys, since our voices are so specific to who we are.
